Poetry Slam Information

Do you write your own poetry? You can compete in our spring semester Poetry Slam to be held the week of April 21st, 2014.

The PRHS Media Center is excited to sponsor the 9th semi-annual Porter Ridge Pirate Poetry Slam!  This competition is about creativity.  Write your own poetry and perform it.  Students may compete individually or as a team.  If students wish to compete as a team, they must also have worked together to write the poem.  Performances are judged based on ideas and content, conventions, poise and body language, and voice.

Round 1

The first round will take place in English classrooms during the week of April 7th through the 11th or on Monday, April 21st.  Any student who is not enrolled in English during this semester or whose class is not participating, may sign up to participate during 3rd block in the media center (please sign up by Friday, April 11th).  The first round is judged by their peers.  The number of students who will move on to the semi-final round on Wednesday will be determined once we have a total number of students participating.

Round 2 - Semi-finals

The semi-final round will take place during each block in the media center on Wednesday, April 23rd.  Prior to competing, the semi-finalists must submit a typed copy of his/her poem for the judges to see.  The judges for this round will be school and district personnel.  A total of 20 students will move on to the final round on Friday.

Round 3 - Finals

The final round will take place during fourth block in the auditorium on Friday, April 25th.  At this time, the judges will be school and district personnel, and community volunteers. In addition, the fall semester Poetry Slam winner may also serve as a judge. Finalists may invite two friends and/or parents to attend.
